When The Dukes of Hazzard premiered in 1979, an orange Dodge Charger quickly became one of the most recognizable cars ever to appear on television. The General Lee wasn't simply transportation for Bo and Luke Duke — it became one of the stars of the show.
Based primarily on 1968 and 1969 Dodge Chargers converted to General Lee specifications, the production went through an extraordinary number of cars because of the show's famous jumps and stunt sequences.
Sources vary on the exact number used, with estimates ranging from roughly 250 to more than 300 Chargers. Many were destroyed or heavily damaged during filming.
Only a small number of documented original General Lees are believed to survive today.
